Zeit-Wissen Prize honours sustainability

Prizes of EUR 10,000 in three categories - Hamburg start-ups focus on upcycling

Applicants have until the deadline of August 31, 2019 to submit their entries for the Zeit Wissen Prize Mut zur Nachhaltigkeit (Encouraging Sustainability). The annual award honours individuals, initiatives and entrepreneurs who make a special contribution to sustainable development. The award will be presented by the Mut zur Nachhaltigkeit initiative, Zeit Wissen and Aurubis AG at the Zeit Knowledge Sustainability Congress in early 2020.

From knowledge to action

Sustainability is not just an obligation. It is our opportunity for social, economic and scientific innovations,” said Andreas Sentker, Manager of Die Zeit Knowledge section. The prize will be presented in the categories “Knowledge”, “Action” and “Take off”. Previous award winners have stood out for their efforts to close the gap between knowledge and action and by developing sustainable alternatives with innovative, scalable business models. A jury consisting of representatives of science, economics, society and media will select the nominees, who will be announced in December 2019. The winners can look forward to grants of EUR 10,000 per category.

Sustainable business ideas from Hamburg

More and more companies with a sustainable business idea are launching in Hamburg. Bio Lutions, for instance, specialises in ecological packaging and disposable tableware made from agricultural residues and only recently secured EUR 8.3 million in capital. The Hamburg-based start-up Bracenet focuses on upcycling by freeing the seas of ghost nets and turning them into accessories.
