Otto Now launches subscriptions for electric scooters

Otto's subsidiary to offer alternative to e-scooter rental services

Otto Now is launching e-scooters that do not have to be rented per minute and are free of activation fees and fixed usage areas, a press release said Wednesday (July 17, 2019). The scooters can be rented for at least one month for use anywhere in Germany and then be returned. The offer begins in late August and marks an expansion of the Otto Now rental model.

Alternative to free-floating model

The free floating models for e-scooters have been operating in major German cities since mid June. The scooters can be parked and rented anywhere for an activation fee of EUR 1 and a fare of around EUR 0.15 cents per minute. However, the scooters are already coming in for criticism as users have been parking them at random and because the vehicles wear down quickly. “We would like to offer an alternative to previous e-scooter rentals with our new mobility concept,” said Sören Nilsson, co-founder of Otto Now. The e-scooters can be hired initially for EUR 39 and later for EUR 49 per month including registration, insurance and delivery. Those interested in Otto Now’s e-scooter can register online and be notified of order dates for the scooters. Otto Now will also carry out maintenance on the scooters. Hopes are now high that the e-scooter subscription model will help improve care of the vehicles.

Other subscription services

Grover and Gethery first launched first subscriptions for e-scooters. However, their vehicles had to be taken out of circulation due to a lack of registrations across Germany. Grover expects to be back on the market early august, the company told. Sharing services such as Bird are also working on subscription models.
